What kind of gym are you looking for?

This is a question a lot of people are asking right now as they head into the new year. It's an important one if you're looking to hit specific goals.

Lately I've been sitting down with my athletes to discuss their goals. Not just one big "scary" goal, but their one month, three to four month, sixth month and then their one year goal. Having goals are important especially when there is buy in from both the athlete and the coach to drive towards each one of those goals with purpose.

First I would urge you to set goals before looking into the gym that best fits your needs. Once you have a direction then seek out the gym that will get you to that destination the quickest. When I say quickest I mean with the most direct route. Let's say my goal was to deadlift 500 pounds but I had never picked up a barbell before. Well if you decided to go at this endeavor alone in a globo gym your path might take longer than going to a powerlifting/strength and conditioning coach. If your goal was to run a marathon, you could choose to go to any gym with a treadmill. Without a running or endurance coach to be your guide, however, it will take you a lot longer to hit your goals.

Instead of looking at what equipment a gym has, look at their staff and ask if those people are best suited to help you along your journey.
